Problems Whilst Filming

The problems I faced whilst filming my music video where mainly to do with the location and POV shots.

Firstly the location of my music video is in many different places and is primarily on roads. therefore in order to film, the camera needs to be in the road filming with the actor. I was very careful in picking the right places to film however due to it being a weekend and a busy time of year more cars than expected halted my filming process. This resulted in longer filming hours and a change of location in some places.

Another problem I faced was filming the POV shots. My original concept was to have myself running and the viewer seeing it through my perspective. However once viewing the footage it turns out it did not look as well as i thought it would. the footage was too shaky and didn't seem like a good fit for the music video. Therefore I decided to go with an actor and film him running instead.

Filming Schedule

Filming Schedule

I will hopefully be filming this weekend Saturday 6th - Sunday 7th December. I am aiming for the whole video to be shot in those two days. The schedule below will give an overall plan/summary of the days ahead.

Late afternoon - commence shooting

Start filming the core material of the video first which is the POV shots/chase scenes.

Afterwards the filming of scenery shots will be done

Finally I will shoot shots of the car driving, tracking shots long shots and establishing shots may be used

My Song Lyrics

Below are the lyrics of the song I will be using for my music video. As you can see the lyrics will hopefully match up to my plans in shooting the music video and the concept of it.

"Lost In The World" (feat. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver)
[Sample From "Woods": Justin Vernon]
I'm up in the woods, I'm down on my mind
I'm building a still to slow down the time
I'm up in the woods, I'm down on my mind
I'm building a still to slow down the time
I'm up in the woods, I'm down on my mind
I'm building a still to slow down the time

[Chorus 2x:]
I'm lost in the world, I'm down on my mind
I'm new in the city, and I'm down for the night
Down for the night
Said she's down for the night

[Kanye West:]
You're my devil, you're my angel
You're my heaven, you're my hell
You're my now, you're my forever
You're my freedom, you're my jail
You're my lies, you're my truth
You're my war, you're my truce
You're my questions, you're my proof
You're my stress and you're my masseuse
Mama-say mama-say ma-ma-coo-sah
Lost in this plastic life,
Let's break out of this fake ass party
Turn this into a classic night
If we die in each other's arms we still get laid in the afterlife
If we die in each other's arms we still get laid

[Chorus:]
(I'm lost in the world)
Run from the lights, run from the night,
(I'm down on my mind)
Run for your life,
I'm new in the city, and I'm down for the night
Down for the night
Down for the night
I'm lost in the world, been down for my whole life,
I'm new in the city but I'm down for the night
Down for the night
Down for the night

Who will survive in America?
Who will survive in America?
Who will survive in America?

[Chorus:]
I'm lost in the world, I'm down on my mind
I'm new in the city, and I'm down for the night
Down for the night
Said she's down for the night
I'm lost in the world, I'm down on my mind
I'm new in the city and I'm goin' for a ride
Goin' for a ride
I'm lost in the world, been down for my whole life
I'm new in the city but I'm down the for the night
Down for a night, down for a good time

Inspiration For Music Video - Concept

Concept - J.Cole - She Knows

My inspiration for my music video in terms of the overall concept being an actual story instead of the artist singing into the camera is from music videos such as J.Cole - She Knows. I liked the idea of the music video as it was unique and stood out from all the other music videos. I liked the way it was viewed as a short story rather than just another typical music video. a lot of the time music videos that have a lot of meaning don't really have a video to support them.

I think the narrative based music videos are very professional looking and are better than other music videos such as concept and performance. Narrative music videos provide a lot more entertainment and draw the audience's attention in more as it requires them to focus on the story and follow it the whole way through.

Location

Location

The location of my music video will be shot entirely outside. As to where it will be shot, I want the video to be idealy in a quiet area. The location will have a long road with woods near by. I do not want the location to be in a typically busy or urban area as I feel it would take away from the music video and its theme of being lost. The whole idea is for the viewers and the character to feel lost and alone as he is running.

New Plan

New Plan

My new plan is slightly different to the original plan however I will just be changing the overall plot of the music video. Instead of having have someone that wakes up in the woods and does not remember why. My idea is to film my actor running along the road after a girl that has left a note saying she is leaving. shots of the girl driving to a train station will be used along with outside shots of the car. the cuts between the two will get faster as the song progresses. the ending of the video will be the boy getting to the station but it being too late. The video will be shot primarily is on the road in quiet suburban areas. The video will will be set in the late afternoon and I will have two people in my film. The video will be a narrative performance

The video will be simulate how lost the actor is as he runs after the girl leaving him. As he is running after her the rap lyrics will show how he feels about the girl.

Story Board

Story board

Characters:

Main character shot from his POV, being chased
The chaser, in the car hunting down the boy

Video:
The layout of my music video will be like a short film it will be a narrative music video, which is loosely based on the lyrics of the song. The point of this video is to tell a story, the video will jump straight into the action where the boy is already being chased to create the feeling of being lost to the audience. The video will be entirely a chase scene between the boy and the car with a few scenery shots at the beginning and end of the video. The penultimate end of the video will be somewhat of a cliffhanger. Originally the ending as seen in the story board was having a mysterious person save the boy but after further evaluation i felt it would be better if the video were to end with the boy falling over turning around and having the car accelerating towards him (into the camera) and then a cut to a black screen with the title of the song.

Filming

Filming

Filming the video will be hard but doable as I need to find a good way to shoot  from the main characters point of view (POV).

I will be using two different cameras to film my video, one camera will be a regular video camera with a stand, mostly used for scenery shots and filming different shots of the car that is chasing the boy.

The other will be a much smaller camera which I can hopefully attach to a helmet or to my body to shoot the POV. The type of camera i will be using will probably be an Iphone camera or a GoPro

I will also be using a tripod with the regular video camera to keep a still shot and accurate movement when filming scenery and shots of the car driving down the road

Music Video Ratings

 Music Video Rating

 Breaking News

 As of October 1st 2014

Music videos shown online are to be given age ratings in the same way as films are.

A pilot project has been welcomed by David Cameron who says it will help parents protect their children from seeing inappropriate content.

However only three record labels have signed up to the agreement which are Sony, Universal and Warner which will begin on Friday 3rd October 2014.

The companies will submit music videos that may potentially cause concern to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), which will issue the promo with a 12, 15 or 18 certificate as well as content advice for viewers.

The pilot, which also has backing from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), comes in the wake of growing concerns about the sexualised content of music videos in the past year.

Rihanna, Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj have all been criticised for their “pornographic” videos, which are available for children to watch on YouTube or Vevo with no restrictions or parental guidance.

Inspiration For Music Video - Location

Inspiration For Music Video -Location

Deciding on my locations for my music video was vital as it helps set the tone of the video and also has to correlate with the song as well. My music video will be set in the woods and other quiet locations such as empty roads. I also may film in London however I am not defiantly going to film there as it depends on how the filming goes in my other locations and if i decide to film the whole video in those locations. If I feel I need to expand on the story that I am trying to tell in the video I may need to find other locations that will help complement the video.

My inspirations for my music video locations wise are music videos such as Travis Scott - Upper Echelon. This video is shot entirely in the woods showing different activities going on to help set the mood for the video and the song.

My other inspiration is from Bon Iver - Michicant. this video is also set outdoors in the woods and provides a lot of scenery shots which is also something that I will be putting in my music video.

Inspiration For Music Video - Camera

Inspiration For Music Video

There have been quite a few things that have inspired me for my music video, one of them being seeing other music videos filming in first person. I think filming in first person stands out and offers something different and brings the audience into the video as it looks like they are the main character. this makes the video more interesting and gets the audience more emotionally involved.

An Example of music videos shot in first person are I Got U by Duke Dumont Ft. Jax Jones. In this video the main actor steps into a virtual reality where he lives a luxury life style. the audience shows his point of view during the events in the virtual reality. the theme of the song is very happy and joyful.

Current Plan

Current Plan

My song that I will now be using for my music video is Lost In The World by Kanye West. The song features mainly singing with only a short amount of rapping in the video. My idea is to film my actor runningaway from a car that is chasing him, the boy is meant to be on the run and living in the woods. shots of the car driving towards him will be used along with outside shots with the car speeding down the road. the cuts between the two will get faster as the song progresses. the ending of the video will be the boy falling to the ground and the car going into the camera. The video will be shot primarily on the road in quiet suburban areas the driver will not be revealed. The video will will be set in the late afternoon and I will have two people in my film. The video will be a narrative performance

My Original Plan

My Original Plan

My original plan was to go with the song Robocop. The theme of the video would be a love video and filmed outside in the city. The overall tone of the video would be a happy, joyful video featuring a lot of jump cuts to match the beat of the song.

The general location of the song would be in London, on the outskirts of London and possibly in Brighton. However whilst planning this I started to listen to other songs and started to come up with, in my opinion, better ideas for a different song as they were realistic and good concepts.
