Born Free - M.I.A
M.I.A., is a British-Tamil recording artist, songwriter, painter
and director. The moniker "M.I.A." is both a play on her own name and a
reference to the abbreviation for Missing in Action. Her compositions combine elements of electronic, dance, alternative,
hip hop and world music. she began her career in 2000 as a
visual artist, filmmaker and designer in west London before beginning
her recording career in 2002
M.I.A. has never been shy about causing a fuss via her artistic output
and the singer's 2010 video for "Born Free" was a case of her taking things well beyond the classification
of "fuss". The nine-minute promo featured a world where redheads were
the victims of a brutal genocide. The clip, directed by Romain Gavras,
echoed violence experienced by oppressed groups across the globe. The
violent content of "Born Free" was condemned in some circles and was
promptly banned from YouTube after less than a day on the video sharing
service. The video may have been controversial, but critics raved about
it. The clip was considered an instant classic, earning praise for the
way it bravely tackled its weighty subject matter.
