 M.I.A., is a British-Tamil recording artist, songwriter, painter and director. The moniker "M.I.A." is both a play on her own name and a reference to the abbreviation for Missing in Action. Her compositions combine elements of electronic, dance, alternative, hip hop and world music. she began her career in 2000 as a visual artist, filmmaker and designer in west London before beginning her recording career in 2002







M.I.A. has never been shy about causing a fuss via her artistic output and the singer's 2010 video for "Born Free" was a case of her taking things well beyond the classification of "fuss". The nine-minute promo featured a world where redheads were the victims of a brutal genocide. The clip, directed by Romain Gavras, echoed violence experienced by oppressed groups across the globe. The violent content of "Born Free" was condemned in some circles and was promptly banned from YouTube after less than a day on the video sharing service. The video may have been controversial, but critics raved about it. The clip was considered an instant classic, earning praise for the way it bravely tackled its weighty subject matter.
