Greatest Music Videos - Rock - Welcome To The Black Parade

Greatest Rock Music Videos

Generally, music videos that are from the rock genre have the band playing their instruments. This applies to Welcome to the Black Parade as you can see from these pictures as all of the band members are up on the miniature stage playing their instruments and singing. Also, all of the band members are wearing darker clothing and we would normally associate darker clothing with bands from the rock genre. As many rock bands wear black because it portays them to be serious, bad and against the system as they try to stand out from the crowd.

Goodwins theory states that a video must have a relationship between the lyrics and visuals. This applies to this music video in many areas. For example, as the lyrics 'disappointed faces of your peers' are sung, the main artist, slaps his unhappy looking face, therefore it shows that there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals as Gerard is miming what the lyrics are saying. He does this again, when the lyrics 'she's watching over me' are played and he makes his arm go above his head. Again, he is miming what he's singing. Therefore, showing that there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.

Another way in which there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is when the lyrics 'join the black parade' are sung and directly after we are shown a parade of people wearing black clothing. So, we get a visualisation of what the 'black parade' looks like. Therefore, this shows that there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.

There is a relationship between the music and the visuals. For example, at the start of the song, the music is much slower than towards the middle of song and the cuts between shots are much more slower than when the music starts to gets quicker. Also, the cuts between the shots towards the middle often             change when there is a new guitar strum.

There are many close-ups within this music video so this point of Goodwin's analysis applies to Welcome to the Black Parade. Also, when this video was release, My Chemical Romance began to develop their own style, which was called the 'Black Parade era' so they did have a recurring motif which appeared in almost all of their work during this time.

The notion of looking applies to this music video as there main character at the start of the video is looking through the tv, and in turn the artist on the tv is looking back through the screen at the man lying in the bed. However, there is no voyeuristic treatment of the female body at all in this music video so this part of Goodwin's analysis does not apply to Welcome to the Black Parade.
