Same Girl
Same girl is a duet by R.kelly and Usher it was released in 2007
The music video is narrative as it follows a story. the music video shows a contentious conversation between R.Kelly and Usher which is about how they have both been seeing the same girl.
The video to
this song 'acts' out the lyrics with the actors being the artists. The
video starts off as the song does with R.Kelly and Usher talking about
features of their new girlfriends. This verse is shot with the two men
on the phone using cuts and a split screen to see them both
talking/singing. Along with the two men, the girl is also shown. A
distinctive shot is when the screen splits with the girl in the middle
and the two men either side. This shot reinforces their conclusion that
they're seeing the same girl.
Throughout the video representations of wealth are shown. From big posh houses to flashy cars there isn't a moment where money isn't displayed. During the second verse R.Kelly and Usher are driving in an Aston Martin (which the camera purposely focuses on) quoting what the girl has said to them both, another sign of wealth is the private plane R.Kelly is shown to be on this renforces the idea that these men are above others and are wealthy. As they play basketball together they connote a scheme to expose this girl of her lies. In this attempt to reveal all, they're shocked to find out that its not the same girl but in fact an identical twin.
Another sign of wealth is what they both wear. Both these men wear flashy clothes such as suits, sunglasses and leather jackets. This furthers the ideology that these men are of high class and standard. The video and song has an unusual theme as we are used to the idea of men playing around but not women. However there is still a lot of stereotypes here such as extravagant houses, cars and restaurants. Also the woman is portrayed as a sex object and, even though she has some power over the men, she is seen in fragmented shots and often in sexual situations. Her costume is revealing and exaggerate her sexuality. Also to further the message of the video that the woman is in the wrong and the men are to be sympathised with both usher and R kelly are seen to be wearing white to show their purity and innocence to the audience.
